Measure the repair after cutting back loose edges, then choose cold mix or hot mix for the quantity check.

Measure the finished repair volume

Measure after removing loose edges and debris. Enter the compacted depth, not the fluffy depth before tamping. The calculator separates compacted volume from order volume; waste increases the order quantity only.

Cold mix uses the compacted yield printed on the bag. Hot mix uses a supplier or tested density to convert volume into planning weight and tons.

Follow the product instructions for minimum thickness, maximum lift thickness, weather limits, and compaction. A calculator cannot tell whether the base below the repair is stable.

Cold patch coverage by square feet

A bag with 0.5 cubic feet of compacted yield covers about 6 square feet at 1 inch deep or 3 square feet at 2 inches deep before waste. Deeper patches cover less area per bag.

Use the compacted yield printed on your product instead of assuming every bag covers the same area. The 10% waste column below is a planning shortcut for irregular edges and material left in the bag.

Compacted depth Coverage per 0.5 cu ft bag Coverage with 10% waste
1 in 6.0 sq ft 5.5 sq ft
2 in 3.0 sq ft 2.7 sq ft
3 in 2.0 sq ft 1.8 sq ft
4 in 1.5 sq ft 1.4 sq ft

For a full driveway, lane, or parking lot, use the asphalt tonnage calculator. For narrow cracks measured in linear feet, use the asphalt crack filler calculator. For contractor installation or replacement budgets, use the asphalt driveway cost calculator.

FAQ

How many bags of cold patch asphalt do I need?

Measure the repair length, width, and compacted depth. The calculator converts that volume to cubic feet, adds waste, divides by the compacted yield per bag, and rounds up to a whole bag.

Can I calculate cold patch bags from square feet?

Yes. Multiply the repair square feet by the compacted depth in feet to get cubic feet, add waste, then divide by the compacted yield printed on the bag. Round the result up to a whole bag.

What yield should I enter?

Use the compacted yield from the bag or technical data sheet. Bag weight alone is not enough because products can have different aggregate gradations and compacted yields.

Can I use this for cracks?

This page is for potholes and patches with measurable width and depth. Narrow cracks usually need a crack filler or sealant made for that joint width.

Can I estimate hot-mix patch weight here?

Yes. Choose Hot mix, enter the compacted depth, waste allowance, and a supplier or tested density. The result separates compacted volume from order volume and shows planning weight and tons.

When should I use the asphalt tonnage calculator instead?

Use the asphalt tonnage calculator for larger hot-mix paving areas that are ordered by the ton. Use this page for a measured patch where you need packaged cold-patch bags or a focused hot-mix quantity check.
