What this calculator estimates

This page estimates the asphalt material leaving the site. It converts the removed area and depth into in-place volume, then applies the density you enter to estimate mass. Optional truck payload and receiving-rate fields add haulage planning and a receiving or recycling allowance.

It is not a complete demolition or paving quote. Keep breaking, milling, loading, hauling, traffic control, labour, equipment, permits, base repair and replacement paving as separate scope items.

These are planning categories, not a substitute for a pavement investigation or approved method statement. The correct depth depends on the failed layer, the proposed repair and local specifications.

A shallow milling pass and a full-depth tear-out produce different material shapes and handling requirements. The Federal Highway Administration describes milling and full-depth removal as different sources of reclaimed asphalt pavement; use the method and material condition that match the job.

How the removal quantity formula works

The calculator keeps the physical chain visible: area × depth gives in-place volume; volume × density gives removed mass; mass ÷ payload, rounded up, gives whole truck loads.

US example

50 ft × 20 ft × 3 in = 1,000 ft² and 250 ft³ in place. At 145 lb/ft³, that is 18.13 US tons. With a 20-ton payload, plan 1 load before checking route and facility limits.

Metric example

100 m × 5 m × 50 mm = 500 m² and 25 m³ in place. At 2,200 kg/m³, that is 55 tonnes. With a 20-tonne payload, plan 3 loads before confirming local haulage rules.

If depth or density changes by section, calculate each section separately. Do not use a loose RAP bulk density with an in-place volume unless you are intentionally planning loose stockpile or truck volume.

Plan receiving, hauling and RAP recycling

  • Ask the receiving facility whether it accepts clean asphalt, mixed loads, chunks from full-depth demolition and milled RAP.
  • Confirm whether the fee is charged per tonne, cubic metre, load, minimum load or vehicle entry.
  • Keep the asphalt quantity separate from base, soil and concrete so the recycling route and disposal rate remain auditable.
  • Use the truck-load result to plan movements, but verify legal payload, axle limits, route restrictions and queue space at the work site.

Clean RAP may be recycled or reused, but acceptance and performance depend on material quality, contamination, processing and the governing project specification. FAQ

What does this asphalt removal calculator estimate?

It estimates the in-place volume and mass of asphalt that leaves the site. If you enter a truck payload or receiving rate, it also estimates whole truck loads and that receiving or recycling charge. It does not price breaking, milling, loading, hauling, labour or replacement paving.

Should I use compacted or loose asphalt density?

Use the density that matches the quantity you are estimating. For pavement mass, use the existing in-place compacted density. Loose RAP in a truck or stockpile has a different bulk density and should not be mixed with in-place volume.

How deep should asphalt be milled or removed?

Enter the depth specified for the job. Surface milling is often a shallow maintenance operation, while partial-depth and full-depth removal depend on the failed layers and the planned repair. The depth bands on this page are planning examples, not a design decision.

How are truck loads calculated?

The estimated removed mass is divided by the legal payload you enter and rounded up to a whole load. Confirm the vehicle's permitted payload, route restrictions and receiving facility limits before scheduling trucks.

Can removed asphalt be recycled?

Often, clean reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) can be accepted for recycling or reuse, but acceptance, contamination rules, testing and fees vary. Call the receiving facility before milling or demolition and keep asphalt separate from soil, concrete and other debris where required.

What is the difference between milling and full-depth removal?

Milling removes a controlled layer and usually produces granular RAP. Full-depth removal breaks out the asphalt section to the base or subbase and may produce larger pieces that need sorting or crushing. The correct method depends on pavement condition and the approved scope.

Does this include the cost of removing and hauling asphalt?

No. The optional rate is only the receiving, disposal or recycling rate you enter. Equipment, crew, loading, haul distance, traffic control, permits and replacement work need separate quote items.

What if the pavement depth changes across the site?

Split the project into sections with consistent area, depth and density, calculate each section separately, then add the results. One average depth can hide a meaningful quantity difference on a rehabilitation project.
