Typical guidance is 2–4 in. Use the depth recommended for your bed and mulch.

Enter the volume printed on one bag to see how many whole bags to buy. Leave blank for bulk volume only.

Compare bagged vs bulk cost

Add the prices you were quoted. The comparison uses entered material and delivery costs only.

$
/ bag

Requires a bag size. Leave blank if you only need quantities.

$

Use the supplier's price for one cubic yard or cubic metre.

$

Leave blank to show bulk material cost before delivery. Enter 0 only when delivery is free.

How this calculator works

Measure each bed as a rectangle, circle or tree ring, or enter a known combined area. Add the mulch depth and the package volume printed on your bag; the calculator keeps the exact volume and rounds only the purchase count.

Use the package volume printed on your bag rather than assuming every product has the same coverage. The optional cost comparison stays tied to the prices and delivery fee you enter.

How much mulch do I need?

Mulch volume is the covered area multiplied by the planned depth. This calculator keeps the intermediate result in cubic feet, then displays cubic yards and cubic feet for U.S. units or cubic metres and litres for metric units.

For several beds, add each rectangle, circle or tree ring separately. If you already measured the complete area, switch to the total-area option instead of recreating every shape.

Choose a depth and package size

A common planning range is 2–4 inches (5–10 cm), but the useful depth depends on the mulch, plants, soil, climate and whether an existing layer remains. Use the depth recommended for your application and supplier material.

Enter the volume printed on one bag to see whole bags to buy. Leave it blank when you only need bulk volume. A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, but package sizes vary, so the printed bag volume is the value that controls the count.

Compare bagged and bulk material

The optional comparison uses only the prices and delivery fee you enter. It does not add taxes, labour, handling, supplier minimums or an automatic waste allowance. Check the quote scope and delivery terms before ordering.

For a tree ring, enter the outside diameter and the clear inside opening. Do not pile mulch against a trunk or root flare; confirm the appropriate clearance and depth for the site.

Bags of mulch per cubic yard

A cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. Use the package volume printed on the bag; purchase quantities must be whole bags.

FAQ

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. That equals 18 bags at 1.5 cubic feet each, 13.5 bags at 2 cubic feet each, or 9 bags at 3 cubic feet each. A real purchase rounds any partial bag up to a whole bag.

How much mulch do I need for 1,000 square feet?

At 2 inches deep, 1,000 square feet needs about 6.17 cubic yards. At 3 inches it needs about 9.26 cubic yards, and at 4 inches it needs about 12.35 cubic yards.

How do I measure an irregular garden bed?

Split it into a few rectangles and circles, add each as a separate area, and let the calculator combine them. If you already measured the complete area, use Enter total area.

How do I calculate mulch for a tree ring?

Choose Tree ring / border, enter the outside diameter, then enter the diameter of the clear inner opening. The calculator subtracts the opening before applying the mulch depth.

Is bagged or bulk mulch cheaper?

It depends on bag size, bag price, bulk price, delivery charge, supplier minimums and the amount needed. Enter both prices and an explicit delivery fee to compare the entered material costs on the same job.

Should I add extra mulch to the result?

Do not apply an allowance automatically. Check measurements, existing depth, settlement, supplier ordering increments and the application guidance for the mulch before deciding whether to order extra.

Estimate scope

Results depend on the measurements, depth, package volume and prices you enter. Taxes, labour, handling, supplier minimum orders, unentered delivery fees, settlement and site-specific horticultural guidance are not added automatically.
