Polymeric Sand Calculator
Work out how many bags to buy using paver dimensions and a product yield, or the coverage on your bag.

How the polymeric sand estimate works
Use this polymeric sand calculator for pavers to find a bag count from a matching coverage rate or a documented installed yield.
- Coverage on the bag? Choose Product coverage. Enter your area and the rate that matches your paver shape, joint width and fill depth. Bag weight is optional for the bag count.
- Rectangular pavers and a documented yield? Choose Paver dimensions. Measure the joints and enter the installed joint-volume yield per bag.
If you do not have a product yield, the dimensions method shows the volume without inventing a weight. Look for an applicable coverage figure on the packaging, or ask the manufacturer.
Match the coverage wording to the format
Rectangular joint geometry
With paver length L, width W, joint width j and actual fill depth d, use consistent length units:
- Joint fraction
- j × (L + W + j) ÷ [(L + j) × (W + j)]
- Joint volume
- Paving area × joint fraction × d
- Bags before rounding
- Joint volume ÷ product yield per bag
The repeating module counts crossing joints once. It estimates the whole paved area, including pavers and joints; it does not calculate perimeter gaps or individual cut pavers.
Coverage and whole bags
- Bags before rounding
- Area ÷ coverage per bag
- With extra waste
- Bags before rounding × (1 + waste ÷ 100)
- Whole bags
- Round the result up
For a coverage range, the higher coverage gives the lower material requirement. The lower coverage gives the higher requirement. The calculator keeps both estimates and shows reserve against the upper purchase quantity.
Three purchase examples
Single coverage: 200 sq ft
Area: 200 sq ft · Coverage: 50 sq ft/bag · Loss included
200 ÷ 50 = 4 bags
Bag weight is not needed for this count. Add it only if you want weight and reserve information.
Coverage range: 300 sq ft
Area: 300 sq ft · Coverage: 60–100 sq ft/bag · Additional waste entered: 10%
300 ÷ 100 × 1.10 = 3.3 → 4 bags
300 ÷ 60 × 1.10 = 5.5 → 6 bags
Buy 4–6 bags. At $40 per bag, that is $160–$240. With a 50 lb bag, estimated demand is 165–275 lb; buying 6 bags gives 300 lb and 25–135 lb of estimated reserve after the allowance.
Maximum coverage: 240 sq ft
Area: 240 sq ft · Bag states up to 120 sq ft/bag
240 ÷ 120 = at least 2 bags
Actual coverage can be lower, so two bags may not be enough. Use a matching rate or range for a bounded estimate.
These are arithmetic examples, not recommended product rates or a default waste percentage.
Measure the depth you will actually fill
Measure down from the intended sand surface to the bottom of the prepared joint. Do not enter the full paver thickness simply because it is printed on the paver label. A recess below the surface is a separate measurement, and installation requirements depend on the product.
For irregular flagstone, mixed paver sizes, spacer lugs, false joints or changing joint widths, use coverage suited to that installation. A small installation mockup can help check use, but its product and compaction conditions must match the job.
- Mockup yield per bag
- Joint volume V × bag weight B ÷ dry mass used M
Record whether the measured dry mass includes installation loss.
Polymeric sand questions
How much polymeric sand do I need for pavers?
If your bag lists coverage for your paving, enter your area and its matching coverage under Product coverage. The calculator rounds up to whole bags; Bag weight is optional. For rectangular pavers, you can instead enter joint dimensions and a documented installed yield per bag.
How many square feet does a 50 lb bag cover?
There is no single coverage for every 50 lb bag. Paver size, joint width, fill depth and the product all affect it. Use the coverage printed for your installation conditions. If the manufacturer gives a range, enter both ends rather than choosing the midpoint.
Is joint fill depth the same as paver thickness?
No. Fill depth is the depth that the sand will actually occupy, measured between its intended top and the bottom of the prepared joint. The sand may need to finish below the paver surface or chamfer. Follow the chosen product’s minimum depth and installation instructions.
Can I use this for flagstone or pavers with spacer lugs?
Use Product coverage with a rate appropriate to your stone or paver system. The dimensions method assumes straight-sided rectangular pavers and uniform joints. It does not measure irregular gaps, subtract spacer lugs or model beveled joint profiles.
Should I add extra waste?
Only add an extra percentage when your product rate excludes installation loss. If loss is already included, the calculator does not add it again. If you are not sure, it uses the supplied rate without extra waste and identifies the uncertainty in the result.
What does ‘up to 120 sq ft per bag’ mean?
120 sq ft is the maximum coverage. Dividing your area by 120 gives only a minimum indicated bag count; actual need may be higher. For a bounded estimate, use a matching single value or range, or Paver dimensions with documented installed yield.
