Retaining Wall Calculator: Blocks, Base Stone & Drainage

Estimate the blocks and hidden support materials behind a segmental retaining wall, then review site conditions that may need professional help.

Retaining Wall Calculator: Blocks, Base Stone & Drainage

Calculator unit system

1. Wall layout

Enter the dimensions you know. The result keeps visible wall area, buried courses, and order quantities separate.

Example: 30

Measure along the wall centerline.

Example: 4

Measure from finished grade to the wall top.

Example: 6

Use the wall-system plan or local detail; this is not a universal minimum.

Choose a named profile or enter the face dimensions supplied with your blocks.

Caps are counted separately from retaining blocks.

Shape is used for the planning note; the quantity uses the entered centerline length.

2. Base & drainage

Keep the hidden work visible. Choose a planning profile when you are budgeting, or enter the dimensions from a project detail.

How should we estimate the base and drainage? Planning profile
Planning profile shown in the result

6 in base depth, 2 ft base width, a 1 ft drainage zone, one pipe run along the wall, and a planning geotextile wrap. Replace these assumptions when you have a wall-system or site detail.

3. Site conditions

These choices do not certify the wall. They make the conditions that may need a professional review visible in the result.

A driveway, structure, slope, or “not sure” answer creates a review flag.

This is a planning flag, not a soil classification test.

Tiered walls need their combined geometry reviewed.

Add geogrid quantities from a plan Not provided

Use this only when a wall-system or engineer plan gives you the extension depth and number of rows. Leaving it blank keeps reinforcement unestimated rather than treating it as unnecessary.

Example: 4

Use the design value.

rows

Example: 3 rows. This is a quantity input, not a stability check.

Plan the supplier order Exact quantity only

Leave these blank for exact quantities. Add an allowance, stone supplier increment, or truck volume when you want a purchase target.

Example: 5

This is an editable ordering allowance, not a structural factor.

Example: 0.5

Each stone layer rounds up separately.

Example: 12

Use the carrier's usable volume.

Add local material prices Quantity only

Enter any local unit prices you have. The result totals only priced materials and names items that are still excluded. Leave this group blank if you only need the takeoff.

    Review flags

    • No additional flags.

A retaining wall takeoff that includes the hidden work

Block count is only the visible part of a retaining wall order. This page keeps base stone, drainage gravel, pipe, geotextile, caps, and ordering allowance in separate lines so you can compare a supplier ticket or contractor quote without hiding missing scope.

Start with the planning profile when you are budgeting. If a wall-system manufacturer, contractor, engineer, or local detail gives you project dimensions, switch to Project dimensions and replace the planning values.

    Blocks and caps

Use the actual block face coverage instead of a generic piece count.

    Base and drainage

Keep the support layer, drainage stone, pipe, and fabric visible in the order.

    Review flags

See when height, surcharge, slope, soil, groundwater, or tiered walls need review.

Use the result to check a retaining wall quote

Ask whether the quote includes more than the visible blocks:

    • Base excavation, leveling, and compacted base stone.
    • Drainage gravel, perforated pipe, outlet, and geotextile separation.
    • Caps, corners, curves, cuts, delivery, pallets, and ordering allowance.
    • Geogrid or other reinforcement when the wall system and site require it.

If the wall supports a driveway, parking area, building, deck, pool, or slope, treat the online result as a conversation starter. Confirm the wall-system limits, local permit path, drainage outlet, and soil conditions with a qualified local professional.

    Retaining wall calculator FAQ

How many retaining wall blocks do I need?

Enter the wall length, exposed height, buried embedment, and the face coverage of your block profile. The calculator estimates the number of courses and blocks, then applies the ordering allowance you enter. It does not choose the correct wall system or structural design.

Does this retaining wall calculator include drainage?

Yes. A planning support profile estimates base stone, drainage gravel, one drain-pipe run, and a planning geotextile wrap. If you have project dimensions, switch to Project dimensions and enter them. You can also choose No drainage planned, but the result will warn that zero drainage is not a recommendation.

What is the difference between exposed height and embedment?

Exposed height is the visible portion above finished grade. Embedment is the buried portion below grade. Both affect the estimated number of block courses, while the visible wall face area uses exposed height only.

Does the calculator tell me whether a retaining wall is safe?

No. It provides a material planning takeoff and flags conditions such as height, surcharge, slope, clay soil, groundwater, and tiered walls. It does not certify bearing, sliding, overturning, reinforcement, permits, or construction details.

Can I estimate retaining wall cost?

Open Add local material prices and enter the prices you have from a supplier. The result totals only priced materials and identifies what is still excluded. Labor, delivery, excavation, permits, and installed cost are not silently added.

When should I ask an engineer or contractor to review the wall?

Ask for site-specific review when the wall is tall, supports a driveway or structure, sits beside a slope, has groundwater or clay soil, is tiered, or needs geogrid. Local code, the wall-system manufacturer, site soil, drainage outlets, and the actual load determine the final design.

    Planning note

This calculator is intentionally transparent about its scope. It estimates quantities from the dimensions and planning assumptions you provide; it does not replace a wall-system design, local code review, soil investigation, drainage plan, or contractor takeoff. Confirm product dimensions, local materials, permitted loads, drainage outlets, and construction details before ordering or building.
