Average-end-area fill calculation

The tool treats each section as a roadbed rectangle with two side-slope triangles. It averages the start and end areas, then multiplies by the station distance.

The compacted result is the geometric in-place volume. The allowance adds material for the difference between loose delivery and compacted fill. Use geotechnical or project values when available.

This is a fill-only segment estimate. Separate cut, stripping, unsuitable excavation, topsoil, and material losses instead of netting them into one unverified number.

How does the average-end-area method calculate fill?

It averages the fill cross-sectional areas at the start and end of a segment, then multiplies that average by the segment length.

How are roadway side slopes included?

Each end area includes the roadbed rectangle plus both side-slope triangles. Enter 2 for a slope of 2 horizontal to 1 vertical.

What does the compaction allowance do?

It converts the calculated compacted fill into a larger planning quantity for loose material. Use a project-specific shrink or compaction factor when one is available.

Can this calculator handle several stations or cut sections?

This page calculates one fill segment between two sections. Calculate each fill-only segment separately when the profile has more stations, and keep cut and unsuitable material quantities separate.
